Plan the Ultimate Michigan Summer Road Trip

Navigation:

Michigan has some of the best summers around. There are so many things to do, especially as a family. You can enjoy the lake, eat fresh blueberries, visit museums, watch or play baseball games, and do it all when you hit the road for a trip around the Mitten State.

Luckily, Michigan has beautiful roads and a wide variety of things to do. Pile the family in the car, scheduled stops along the way, pack snacks and some music, and get ready to build family memories!

Summer Road Trip

Road Trip to Traverse City

Traverse City is on the great lake and has two bays. Everyone needs to walk along the lake at least once a summer, and Traverse City, Michigan is a great place to get the job done. While in town, do some window shopping as you stroll down Front Street. Unique stores with that great small-town feel make Front Street an easy stroll to get acquainted with the town.

If you’re looking for souvenirs to embrace your Michigander pride and remember your family vacation, visit the brick-and-mortar LivnFresh shop. You can find us downtown at 121 E. Front Street.

When the summer sun heats up, there’s nothing better than some homemade ice cream. What could be better than a family-operated dairy farm with its own ice cream shop? Check out Moomers Homemade Ice Cream for a perfect summer treat.

Afterward, head to the world-famous Sleeping Bear Dunes. ABC’s Good Morning America called Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore the “Most Beautiful Place in America”, and it is easy to see why. This national park is 64-miles of curving sand dunes. Mountains of sand, forested wilderness islands, and the Michigan freshwater beaches are easily explored by miles of hiking trails.

Travel to Grand Rapids

There are many reasons to visit Grand Rapids, Michigan. As the second largest city in Michigan, it has a lot going for it. The Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is a great place to wander around and visit a tropical conservatory. There are many local breweries around town. Visit the Gerald R. Ford Museum and learn more about this “accidental” president. Take an afternoon to visit the Grand Rapids Art Museum and see the work of Michigan-based artists.

Bring your family to the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. This museum has hands-on exhibits to bring learning to life for your children. To get them excited, let them know there is a real beehive at this museum, and workshops for building robots.

Summer Road Trip

Visit Detroit, Michigan

Your Michigan road trip should definitely include a stop in its most populated city! While you’re downtown, visit the Detroit Institute of Arts. While you’re there, stop at the Detroit Industry Murals painted by world-famous muralist Diego Rivera. The 27 panels show industry at the Ford Motor Company, an important part of the “Motor City” history.

Take your family to a real ball game and see the Detroit Tigers play! Grab a hot dog and some popcorn and join the cheering crowds. Whether your family is dedicated to watching the sport or barely know the game, seeing a live professional game is always an exciting summer experience. There’s nothing better to get some of that Michigan pride going!
