ABR Trails

ABR Trails is located in Ironwood, Michigan which is west of the Upper Peninsula. ABR Trails, or as its otherwise known, Active Backwoods Retreat, offers plenty of trails in a quaint area. There are nearly 45 trails within the 1,100-acre location. Some of the trails range from 1 mile to 8.5 miles.

ABR Trails was named was of the best places to cross-country ski in by Men’s Journal Magazine. It has more than just amazing trails. You’ll find three cabins along the trails, which you can access by ski or snowshoe. Two of the cabins sleep up to six, and one sleeps up to eight. Amenities include a Jacuzzi, electric sauna, fireplace, two baths, and three bedrooms.

Big M Ski Area

The Big M Ski Area is the most impressive with its 40 miles of cross-country trails. This ski area is nestled in the Manistee National Forest. These trails are 18 miles long and are more for experienced skiers. However, they do have trails for beginners. Skiers will enjoy the views of the forest as they wind around the pine trees. There’s also a shelter with a wood stove where skiers can go to warm up after.

Boyne Resorts

Boyne Resorts is home to Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands. These resorts are 30 miles northeast of Traverse City. Combined, they offer trails that run 43.5 miles.

Boyne Mountain has a wide variety of trails that are perfect for skiers of all levels. Boyne Highlands features a 1-mile trail that’s lit up on Friday and Saturday evenings. Skiers who want to spend time at both Boynes can stay at the Tout Creek condominium rentals.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters

The Cross Country Ski Headquarters is located near Higgins Lake. It’s also 17 miles away from Grayling. They offer 12 miles of trails for skiers of all levels. Cross Country Ski Headquarters was named as one of the best Nordic ski locations by Outside Magazine. Gearpatrol claims it’s one of the best Nordic ski areas in all of the Midwest.

This family-friendly company provides skiing lessons, rental skis and equipment, a flagship store, lodging, and cafe. Avid skiers can also purchase apparel, equipment, and more from their website.

Crystal Mountain

Crystal Mountain is just 30 miles away from Traverse City. According to Michigan Living Magazine, it’s one of the best cross-country skiing areas in the state. Crystal Mountain is known for its 18-miles of cross-country skiing trails. These trails can vary from rolling hills to challenging terrains. This area also lights up 4 kilometers of trails for night skiing.

Skiing lessons are available. Clothing and equipment can be purchased at Crystal Mountain’s Nordic Pro Shop. When it comes to lodging, Crystal Mountain has over 250 condos, hotel rooms, suites, townhouses, and resort residences.

Noquemanon Trails

Noquemanon Trails is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It’s known for its annual Ski Marathon, a cross-country event that takes place in the Midwest. The area offers 31 miles of trails to skiers of all levels. Trails can vary from gentle hills to steep climbs. Skiers will enjoy the views of Hogback Mountain and Lake Superior.
