Troy is another city in the suburb of Detroit, Michigan. First settled in the early 19th century, its name was derived from Troy in New York where the first settlers previously resided. In 1955, Troy Township was incorporated and its development soon followed between the 1960’s and 1990’s. Today, it’s one of the fastest growing communities in Michigan. In 2008, Troy ranked 22nd place on the list of “Best Places to Live” in the country according to CNN Money. Their housing, quality of education, economic strength, and recreational opportunities are all taken into consideration. Troy has a good quality of living that it’s the 4th most affordable US city with a median household income amounting to US$90,000.
The city is home to many corporations like ArvinMeritor, Delphi, Budd Company, Kelly Services, and Flagstar Bancorp. It serves as the world headquarters of Kmart before Sears Holdings takes over. But visitors can still reminisce its golden days as its large headquarters complex still stands at the northwest corner of Big Beaver & Coolidge. It’s known for its shopping area and a go-to place of residents in the Detroit area where the impressive Somerset Mall is located. Home to several automotive corporations, and financial companies, Troy is becoming one of the main business district areas in Michigan.
Detroit Zoo
Just a quick drive from its city center, Detroit zoo is a wonderful place to go for families and a lot of animals to see. It’s the most visited tourist attraction in the City of Troy featuring ten historic structures including a blacksmith’s shop, a church, a general store, and the home of the pastor as well as a mud structure. It has the most preserved town building dated from the 1800s. The historic village showcases different exhibits and home with dated fixtures. The main purpose is to maintain each exhibit in its historically correct condition and keep them viewable for the public to see. Staffs are well informed and friendly which makes the tour lot more fun. They can provide accurate details on the city’s deep history that one would not get otherwise from other places. This is a go-to place for history buffs and the likes. The Troy Museum and Historic Village has an all-important role and keeping these precious artifacts and history intact so that other people may see in the future.
Troy Family Aquatic Center
Recreational fun outdoors gets pumped by another level in Troy. The Troy Family Aquatic Center offers great water activities for people of all ages. They have different depths of swimming pool, a water park for little kids, volleyball court and lots of picnic areas. The aquatic center is family-friendly and well-maintained which is a great value for money. Families love how the aquatic center separate shallow play area for little kids who want to fun with the water. They also have fast and slow water slides for older kids and splash pads for toddlers. Aside from the usual hotdog stand, their snack bar offer good healthy options for everyone.
Cranbrook House and Gardens
Just a few miles north of Detroit, the Cranbrook House & Gardens is a destination worth the hassle. This 40-acre land boasts of beautiful gardens and 1908 arts and crafts home. There is plenty to see with beautiful gardens and house. They offer tours between months of May and October. It’s a great place for long leisurely walks, running, biking, and to be just with nature. One of the most adored gardens is their Japanese Garden that has a very tranquil and serene ambiance. It’s a popular destination year round even during winter months where its unique architecture becomes the focus of attention.
