Color Tour Ideas For The Whole Family In Michigan

Fall brings a riot of color to Michigan’s woodlands, parks, and coastlines with shimmering golds, and fiery reds and oranges. Whether you’re into camping, a bed & breakfast inn, or simply a day trip along the country roads, Livnfresh encourages you to take it all in with a fall family getaway.

It’s our favorite time of the year, and we want to share our corner of the world with you. Grab a thermos full of pumpkin lattes and come join us to celebrate this special time of year. Here are a few suggested road trips for a fall color tour in Michigan.

Traverse City

Late September to mid-October is prime time for fall color in the Traverse City-Northport-Frankfort area. The autumn hues blaze in a setting that includes over 250 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline beckoning you to board the schooner Manitou and cross Grand Traverse Bay.

Another option is to sail over a quilt of color with a hot air balloon ride. It’s the season of the grape, too, so consider combining your color tour by visiting one of our local vineyards. Several wineries are scattered throughout the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas, and the area is served by some excellent restaurants.

Petoskey

If you’re looking for a refreshing fall color tour the kids will especially love, Livnfresh suggests this two fun October excursions. Relax and ride on a train pulled by a Great Lakes Central Diesel Locomotive. Get drenched in northern Michigan’s color as you leave the driving to the conductor.

Take great Instagram pics, chat with the other passengers, and enjoy snacks and beverages in the concessions car. This roundtrip tour runs on the weekend of October 12 and 13 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Enjoy the ride south from Petoskey to Boyne Mountain Resort. The slopes are closed, but they operate their Hemlock lift for a bird’s eye view of stunning fall color. If you choose to check-in and stay at the resort, the lift rides are complimentary. Otherwise, the small price of $9 per person is well-worth this unique color tour.

Glen Arbor and the M-22

A drive around the Leelanau Peninsula on the M-22 is a favorite Michigan fall color tour in the Glen Arbor area. In fact, this color tour was nominated for one of USA Today’s “10 Best Awards.” As you wind along the shoreline of the peninsula, you’ll pass through quaint towns surrounded by steep hills and colorful coastal views.

The warm, fall colors combined with turquoise water provides stunning scenery. It’s an easy drive up the shore of West Grand Traverse Bay to Northport, then through Leland and Glen Harbor to Empire. Livnfresh’s favorite stretch is where the route heads south from Glen Arbor to cross the causeway between Big Glen and Little Glen Lakes. You don’t have to stay stuck in the car for the whole trip. Stop and explore the great hiking trails easily accessible from the M-22.

Saugatuck

Saugatuck’s combination of sand dunes, waterways, and towering hardwoods alive with fall color makes the perfect fall family getaway. Check into one of the area’s quaint inns and enjoy some action-packed adventure including hiking in Saugatuck Dunes State Park, biking through picture-postcard villages, driving along country roads, canoeing up the Kalamazoo River, and strolling the lovely shores of Oval Beach.
