Things To Bring To The Beach In Michigan When You Have Kids

Navigation:

If you’re visiting the Wolverine State this summer, there’s a good chance you’ll be heading to the beach. There’s a reason this great state is also nicknamed the Great Lake State. With coastlines bordering three of the great lakes, this state is surrounded by beautiful, inviting beaches. If you’re traveling with the family, it can be helpful to brainstorm a list of essentials before heading to the beach. After all, you don’t want to show up to the coastline only to realize you’ve forgotten something important. We’ve compiled a list of things to bring to the beach when you have kids to help simplify the process.

1. Rolling Beach Cart

If you’re heading to the beach alone or as a couple, there’s a good chance a backpack will suffice. Two beach towels, sunscreen, and other odds and ends are all you’ll really need for a great day along the coast. Things are different when you’re traveling as a family though. It’s always a good idea to take a rolling beach cart to ease the load. After all, a day at the beach is all about relaxation and fun. There’s nothing relaxing or fun about dragging a massive bag around all day.

2. Sunscreen

Even though the Great Lakes State isn’t Florida or California, you still have to remain cognizant about the sun. It’s just as powerful here as any other state. You’ll want to take enough sunscreen to last the whole day for the entire family. Higher SPF sunscreen is always a good option to offer extra protection about harmful sun rays. Don’t forget to apply before getting in the water and to reapply a few times throughout the day, especially if you’re going to spend the entire day at the beach.

3. Snacks

The sun is hot at the beach, and there may not be many shops or restaurants around. We always recommend families to bring snacks to help curb their hunger. If you’re planning to be at the beach for just a few hours, snacks will suffice. On the other hand, you may have to pack a few sandwiches or other meal options if you’re going to spend the whole day at the beach. Nobody wants to deal with hangry family members. With the heat from the sun and all of the swimming, your hunger is going to skyrocket. Packing a few snacks can make a day at the beach much more enjoyable.

4. Cooler

You’re going to need to bring something to keep those snacks cold when visiting the beach. A cooler with some ice will work wonders for your trip. If you’re visiting from out of town and don’t have a cooler, you can always pick up a cheap, styrofoam cooler from a gas station or grocery store. Although these models aren’t as robust as plastic options, they’ll do the trick for a few weeks.

5. Drinks

If you’re bringing a cooler with ice, you might as well leave some room for refreshments. The summer temperatures along the coast can reach pretty high depending on where you’re visiting. Having a cold drink can transform a hot day at the beach into a relaxing getaway. Juice and soda are great options for the kids. The adults should consider grabbing some local beers from Right Brain or Shorts Brewing. Between the two breweries, you’ll have a wide range of options. Don’t forget to bring a bottle opener.
