What US Presidents Are From Michigan?

Navigation:

What US state is the birthplace to the most presidents? If you guessed Virginia, you’re right! Ohio comes in second place with seven. New York is third with five, and Massachusetts is in fourth with four.

Beyond those four states, no other US state is birthplace to more than two presidents, and 39 states have yet to be the birthplace of a president.

However, just because a president wasn’t born in a state doesn’t mean he isn’t from there. For example, Illinois is often referred to as the ‘Land of Lincoln’, but Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky. Often times, a president made his residence in a state other than his birthplace.

Michigan is one of the 39 states in which a president was never born, but it counts Gerald Ford as a native son. While Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska, he lived nearly the entirety of his life in Michigan, and will always be strongly associated with the state.

What US Presidents Are From Michigan

Ford’s Early Life in Michigan

Gerald Ford was born in Nebraska in 1913, but his parents split up only 2 weeks after his birth. Ford moved with his mother to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she soon remarried to a Grand Rapid businessman named Gerald R. Ford.

The young Gerald had his named changed to Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. in honor of the man whom he’d consider as his father for the rest of his life.

Ford grew up to be a star athlete and went to the University of Michigan for college.

Ford’s Career at the University of Michigan

Ford’s athletic achievements continued at the University of Michigan, where he became a standout player on the football team. Ford played multiple positions, as was common at the time, and was a part of two Michigan national championships in 1932 and 1933.

Ford then went on to be voted Michigan’s most valuable player of the 1934 season, his last year at the University. His number has been retired by the University of Michigan.

You can make an argument that Gerald Ford is the greatest athlete to ever become a US President.

Ford’s Rise to Prominence

Ford went to Yale for law school, then joined the Navy after the Pearl Harbor attack. After serving his country during the war, Ford returned to Michigan, where he practiced law and became involved with local Republican politics.

In 1949, Ford challenged the Republican incumbent for a seat in the House of Representatives representing Michigan and won. He would hold that seat for more than 20 years, until 1973, serving his constituents and eventually rising to the position of House Minority Speaker.

What US Presidents Are From Michigan

In 1973, Vice-President Spiro Agnew was forced to resign in disgrace after a scandal, and President Richard Nixon chose Ford as the new Vice President. Ford then found himself elevated to the presidency after Richard Nixon resigned in the wake of the fallout from the Watergate scandal.

Ford would serve as president from 1974 to 1977, losing re-election to Jimmy Carter in the 1976 election.

Ford holds the distinction of being the only US President not to be elected as either president or vice president.

Ford’s Michigan Legacy

As a star athlete for Michigan’s most prominent university and a loyal public servant of the state in Congress for nearly 25 years, Gerald Ford was a man the people of Michigan embraced as their own. For people looking to show their Michigan pride, a wide range of trendy Michigan-themed apparel can be found here.

How did Michigan become a State?

How did Michigan become a State

Michigan has a long and fascinating history. By the time it was admitted to the union as the 26th state on January 26, 1837, it had already seen many population changes, a number of wars, as well as the construction of the Erie Canal.

Some of the first residents were the Hopewell culture, dating back to 1000 B.C. However, when the first Europeans arrived on the scene, the local people were, among others, the Ottawa, the Potawatomi and Ojibwe tribes of Native Americans.

The first Europeans in the area were French explorers looking for a western route to China. They did not find tea but instead fur that would fetch a high price back in Europe, and started trading with local tribes. The first permanent settlement was established in 1668. Soon after, in 1701, the trading post that would later become the city of Detroit was founded.

By 1763 the local tribes had become unhappy with the Europeans rapid expansion and appropriation of their land and staged an attack, led by Cheif Pontiac, which was eventually put down by the British.

In 1805 Michigan became a United States Territory, but there would continue to be battles fought for control between British and U.S. forces until 1813. The 1820s and 1830s saw an influx of migrants, many from New York. This climb in population and settlement led the federal government to take steps to give Michigan statehood in 1835, with the proposal passing in 1837.

After the Civil War Michigan prospered, with the population doubling between 1870 and 1890. Railroads came as a boon to commerce and connected the many growing industries like lumber harvesting, dairy farming, and manufacturing with their respective customers.

How did Michigan become a State

In the 1900s, urban areas flourished. Detriot grew rapidly due to the burgeoning automotive industry, and in Battle Creek, the now-famous Kellogs and Post breakfast cereal companies changed the way people ate.

Then came Henry Ford and his production line, which revolutionized manufacturing, and affordable vehicles exploded onto the scene, with Michigan at the heart of it all. Immigrants poured in from southern and eastern Europe, as well as the South of the U.S.

With this influx came the diversity for which Detroit and Michigan, in general, is known. World War 2 created many new manufacturing jobs that led to prosperity in the post-war years. Motown Records was created and gave the world more great music than can anyone can shake a stick at.

The years since this heyday have brought a lot of struggle and strife to Michigan and its citizens. Between racial tensions, the oil crisis, and burst housing bubbles, not to mention undrinkable water, Michiganians have had much with which to contend. But this only underlines the determination and tenacity that characterizes this part of the country.

Show support for the proud 26th state, and one of the most beautiful regions in the North with clothing from Michigans coolest clothing company. With Hats, hoodies, shirts, jewelry, and decals featuring homegrown designs that show the love locals feel for their state, Livnfresh.com has something for everyone.

The Best Coolers for Beach Days

Navigation:

Beach weather is our favorite kind of weather, and we’re sure it’s yours too! You can enjoy the beach alone, with friends, or with your family. Beaches are also an excellent date spot. For any sort of beach activity, you’re going to take a reliable beach cooler with you. In the following, we’ll take a look at some of our favorite beach coolers for 2019. We aim to provide you with the best information so that you can purchase the best beach cooler for your needs the next time you visit one of Michigan’s beautiful beaches.

The Best Coolers for Beach Days

RTIC Beach Cooler

This is considered to be a luxury beach cooler. It is an excellent alternative to some of the beach coolers listed below. It is durable, sturdy, and comes with strong impact resistance. All of your favorite craft beers can fit easily inside. Don’t worry, they’ll be kept cool and comfortable in the RTIC Beach Cooler. This is an excellent choice for Michigan beaches.

Coleman 16-Can Soft Beach Cooler

Coleman is a recognizable name in the cooler world. This is probably the best choice for individuals that are too busy to put much preparation into their beach experience. It’s probably the easiest cooler to use listed here. With the Coleman 16-Can Soft Beach Cooler, you can carry it on your shoulder with its easily adjusted strap. It can also fit up to sixteen of your favorite beer or soda. It also comes equipped with plenty of pockets to fit all of your extra things.

Yeti Roadie 20 Beach Cooler

One of our favorite coolers from Yeti is the Yeti Roadie 20 Beach Cooler. This model is far more similar to a traditional icebox than some of the other choices we outlined here. The outer shell also is strong enough to hold your body weight, so you can use it as a table or small stool. The Yeti line is consistent in delivering a solid product for any beach occasion.

The Best Coolers for Beach Days

Yeti Hopper Flip Portable Beach Cooler

This is a popular choice for hikers, campers, and regular beach-goers. It is considered one of the best quality beach coolers on the market. It can withstand extreme water sport conditions and even the great outdoors.

The Yeti Hopper is made of fabric that is designed to be resistant to all climates. The fabric is also resistant to shocks and wear-n-tear as well. Whatever you place inside this cooler will be protected from the elements and other shocks. No matter if you use it as an ice chest at the beach, or with you on a camping adventure, this cooler will ensure your drinks are kept at the right temperature. Unfortunately, this cooler is a bit smaller in size compared to some of the others mentioned above. However, we feel it’s enough for a typical beach outing.

We hope this small guide helps you decide on choosing the right cooler for your next beach outing in Michigan. In addition to picking the right cooler, you want to be equipped with the right outdoor apparel. Not only do you want to enjoy the best beaches Michigan has to offer, but you also want to appropriately rep the state you love. Get your favorite Michigan apparel here.

How did Michigan get the Upper Peninsula?

Navigation:

There’s no denying that Michigan has a fairly unique look. While most of the state makes sense from a map-making perspective, there’s still the Upper Penninsula for which you must account. Understanding how Michigan got the Upper Penninsula is a great way to learn a little bit more about Michigan’s amazing history.

The Origins of Michigan

The territory that would someday become Michigan did not actually become part of the country until the end of the Revolutionary War. Ceded to the country as part of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, the initial ‘Michigan Territory’ actually only consisted of the Lower Penninsula. It took time for Britain to give up its claims to the Upper Penninsula, as the area was particularly rich in furs.

How did Michigan get the Upper Peninsula

By 1819, though, the Upper Penninsula became part of the greater Michigan territory. This territory was far larger than the modern day state, though, also encompassing Wisconsin and even parts of Minnesota. When Michigan finally applied to become a state in the 1830s, it would bring in none of the new territory – not even the Upper Penninsula.

The Toledo War

One of the problems with the early United States is that many people didn’t understand the boundaries between territories all that well. One of the major areas of contention was between Ohio and Michigan, concerning the area on the border of the two states. When Michigan applied to become a state, it tried to add the disputed territory.

The war between Ohio and Michigan wasn’t much of a war. The two states deployed militias on either side of the disputed territory, but no one was ever killed. In fact, the only battle ended with shots being fired into the air and everyone going home.

In the end, a compromise was reached. Ohio got the so-called Toledo strip, while Michigan got the Upper Penninsula. In December of 1836, members of Michigan’s legislature agreed to the deal and Michigan assumed the shape that we know and love today.

How did Michigan get the Upper Peninsula

The Great Upper Penninsula

At the time, most people thought that Michigan was getting the short end of the stick when it came to the deal. After all, the Upper Penninsula was sparsely inhabited, didn’t have great farmland, and much of the fur trade had died off.

Of course, that was before anyone found the copper and iron deposits there. Once the deposits were discovered, it was roundly believed that Michigan was the real winner of the Toledo War. Thanks to the Upper Penninsula, Michigan would get a head start on the industrial development that would lead to the state’s golden age.

Michigan’s history has led to the creation of an unusually-shaped, if still amazing, state. It’s amazing to think that none of this would have happened had either Michigan or Ohio actually understood how to read map boundaries correctly, but in the end, the compromise worked out in Michigan’s favor and helped to create the state as its known today.

One of the best ways to celebrate Michigan’s unique history with collectibles and apparel that can remind you of the state. If you want to show off your love for Michigan – and for the Upper Penninsula – make sure to go online and buy the coolest Michigan apparel at Livnfresh.com.

A History of Michigan’s First Vineyard

Navigation:

Many people are unaware of the rich history steeped in the wine vineyards of the state of Michigan. The nearby French-Canadians along with American farmers paved the way as far back as 1679 for the future of beautiful vineyards and tasty wines.

The French Explorers discovered distinctive wild grape vines on a river in Michigan which is now called the Detroit River. Commander Antoine de la Moth Cadillac first planted grapevines at Fort Ponchartrain in Detroit during 1702. The French kept on exploring downriver to what is now known as the River Raisin. River Raisin runs into
Monroe and then empties out into Lake Earie. While traveling down River Raisin in 1792, they discovered it was bountiful with wild grape vines thereupon its name.

A History of Michigan's First Vineyard

Joseph M. Sterling was the first pioneer to establish the Pointe Aux Peaux wine company and produce wine for sale in 1868. Sterling had knowledge of winemaking he had learned in Europe and used it to prosper on 100 acres of grapes in Monroe, Michigan. He helped and encouraged neighboring farmers to grow their own vineyards. Before long, there were vineyards popping up everywhere! You can still visit Sterling State Park, named after Joseph M. Sterling.

Prohibition came along in 1918 as the 18th Amendment, putting some vineyards and local saloons out of business. With Canada nearby, it was easy to bootleg wine and spirits down the river to Monroe. Many risked their lives in the dangerous bootleg business. This went on for years until 1933, when the 21st Amendment repealed prohibition.

Two essential vineyard farmers in Ontario and Windsor, Canada, helped bring the wineries and vineyards back to Michigan once prohibition was repealed. The first farmer, Maurice R. Twomey, founded the Windsor Wine Company and second, Mariono Meconi began Border City Wine Cellars. Border City Wine Cellars was consumed in a treacherous fire and the grapes were none prompting Mariano Meconi to move to Detroit and begin again. Meconi’s winery is now known as St. Julian Wine Company, the oldest in the state. Maurice R. Twomey relocated his winery to the Detroit United Railway after prohibition and named it La Salle Wines and Champagne Company.

There are many wine tours in Michigan. Wine trails consist of vineyards and wineries grouped together for tourist fun and access. There are four extensive wine trails throughout Michigan:

A History of Michigan's First Vineyard

Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail

Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail is quite large with eleven members. They offer Wine Trail weekends, plenty of road signs and, a website to help tourists find them.

Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association

The Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association is made up of the Mawby Vineyards of Suttons Bay, Good Harbor Vineyards of Lake Leelanau, and Leelanau Wine Galleries of Omena. They put on the none other than Leland Wine and Food Festival every year.

Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula

Old Mission Peninsula has wineries all along the peninsula. They host fun wine trail events as well as a website.

Southeast Michigan Pioneer Wine Trail

The Southeast Michigan Wine Trail promotes the wines from their area. They host wine trail events and have a yearly wine tasting festival.

Why not purchase a Michigan State T-shirt, lake shirt, hat or hoodie from livnfresh.com and wine tour wearing Michigan pride!

5 Most Famous Basketball Players From Michigan

Navigation:

The state of Michigan has been the home to many of the leading basketball players the world has ever seen. Some have featured for the Michigan Wolverines and others have either joined the NBA directly from high school or left the state to find long term success. These players make you feel proud to come from Michigan and show your support with all kinds of fan apparel.

basketball players

Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr.

Born in Lansing, Michigan, “Magic” Johnson has been one of the best-known names in Michigan since his high school days when he won a championship with Everett High School. Johnson would go on to win a National Championship with the Michigan State Spartans before being drafted number one overall by the L.A. Lakers. In his rookie season as a professional, Johnson was voted MVP and won the NBA Championship, the first of four titles for the Michigan-born NBA legend.

Chris Webber

For the basketball fans of Michigan, Chris Webber is a legend who should have won more in his career. One of the original members of the Michigan Wolverines iconic, “Fab Five,” Webber had been voted the National High School Basketball Player of the Year when playing for his Detriot high school, Detroit County Day. Webber and the “Fab Five” would appear in two college championship games but would not win a national championship at college or as a professional. The five-time NBA All-Star enjoyed a career taking in the Golden State Warriors, the Washington Wizards, the Sacramento Kings, and the Detriot Pistons.

Chet “The Jet” Walker

he may have been born in Mississippi, but “The Jet” played his high school ball at Benton Harbor and has always been classed as a product of Michigan. After leading Bradley University to the NIT Championship, Walker was drafted by the Syracuse Nationals before they became the Philadelphia 76ers after his rookie season. A seven-time NBA All-Star, Walker linked up with Wilt Chamberlain to win the 1967 NBA Championship. The Hall-of-Famer has had his number 31 jersey retired by Bradley University and remains a legend for the 76ers and his later team, the Chicago Bulls.

George “The Iceman” Gervin

How many players have a cooler nickname than George “The Iceman” Gervin? The answer would be none with the NBA all-star having one of the most complex playing careers in the history of the league. Gervin was born in Detriot and played at Martin Luther King High before joining Long Beach State in California. Gervin returned home to Michigan after one semester and joined Eastern Michigan State before being banned for punching a Roanoke player. Gervin would go on to play for the San Antonio Spurs where he made nine All-Star appearances before joining Michael Jordan for a single season with the Chicago Bulls.

basketball players

Shane Battier

If we measure the success of the player by the awards they have won, there are few basketball players to match Shane Battier of Birmingham, Michigan. Battier won the Mr. Basketball award while studying at Detroit County Day School before spending four years at Duke where he won a National Championship. In the NBA, Battier played for the Grizzlies and Rockets before winning two NBA titles with the Miami Heat.

Celebrating the greats of Michigan basketball is easy with Livnfresh which offers second to none customer service. If you are looking for Michigan-based fan wear, take a look at Livnfresh.com to get the best hoodies and fan wear.

How Oberon became one of Michigan’s Favorite Beers?

How Oberon became one of Michigan's Favorite Beers

The “Michigan” Rush

You don’t need to live in Michigan to figure out why there has been a sudden rush to this state. Yet, we who have made Michigan our home still find our state is an endless vista of interesting neighbors, friends, vacation spots, food, drink and Michigan traditions.

Making Memories Michigan Style

Although we love our winters, it’s the gentle warmth of summer we look forward to our many outdoor activities.

One Michigan tradition is an icy cold Oberon beer to quench our thirst. It’s no surprise our homegrown, excellent quality wheat is one of the ingredients in our Oberon wheat fermented ale and beer.

To understand how significant Michigan wheat is to Oberon beer and ale, it’s important to know Michigan wheat farmers plant a total of 500,000 acres of red and white winter wheat each year. This produces a crop of 40 million bushels on average.

The Oberon Brewery has perfected their fermentation technique to create state-of-the-art beer color and aroma. The brewing masters at Oberon Brewery created a signature yeast that makes Oberon beer and ale one of our finest.

The Beer Connoisseur reviewed Oberon beer and rated it 93. Oberon beer has a delicate balance between yeast, hops, and malt that results in a straw colored brew with a creamy head. The other characteristics that make this Michigan’s finest beer include:
. Mild perfume
. Spicy aroma and flavor with a clove nuance
. Wheat tartness
. Orange zest, a hint of vanilla and refreshing bready notes

How Oberon became one of Michigan's Favorite Beers

The Best Way to Quench Our Thirst

After a day in the Michigan summer sun, a parched throat is always quenched by our famous Oberon beer.

When employees of Livnfresh get together for after work activities at a Michigan pub, a round of Oberon is always part of socializing.

Michigan People Work Hard, Play Hard and Drink Oberon BeerLike many Michigan companies, the Livnfresh company feels an obligation to its staff to encourage healthy, fun activities after a busy week at work.

All work and no play, as the saying goes, makes Livnfresh staffers a tad antsy to be in the fresh air and bright sunshine when temperatures range between 68.5 and 72 degrees. This is perfect weather for a picnic, bicycling or hiking, but only if Oberon beer is kept icy cold and waiting.

When the sun goes down, so do temperatures in Michigan summers. That’s when we head indoors to watch our favorite sports teams while we enjoy Oberon beer sold in cans and bottles. We keep a supply in the refrigerator especially when the weather is hot.

Take a Tour of the Brewery

Like Michigan’s numerous wineries, the brewery where Oberon beer is made offers tours to the public. This can be a fun day and there is no better way to treat yourself to a sample of Oberon than a tour of the place where it is made.

Between the famous brew, the variety of characteristics and special fermentation, Oberon is, without doubt, one of Michigan’s favorite beers.
