The Wolverines are just tearing it up! The University of Michigan picked up right where they left off last year. They are Big Ten basketball right now. Michigan is continuing to build on its proud basketball legacy. John Beilein’s squad looks more poised than ever. They definitely look ready to make another NCAA Championship run. They’re riding a 28-1 record over their past 29 games and cruised past Penn State in their last game. The Wolverines have shown a strong ability to adapt to different defensive looks. Against Penn State, it took a minute, but they soon settled into a groove against PSU’s aggressive man defense. Their single loss happened when? The 2018 NCAA title game. None have been able to stop them since!

The Wolverines are currently No. 2 right behind Duke. So far this season they’re undefeated! The Wolverines are playing like true contenders at this point. They’ve beaten the likes of UNC, Villanova, and Purdue. Michigan didn’t just beat these teams, they ran them out the building. None put up much of a fight. They’re not just scraping by, they’re blowing teams out. Ignas Brazdeikis and Jordan Poole have proven themselves to be sharpshooters all season. Their perfect start looks to be no fluke. Michigan State

Even without Miles Bridges and Jaren Jackson Jr., this team is stacked. The Spartans are led by their trio of Nick Ward, Joshua Langford, and Cassius Winston. You can never underestimate a Tom Izzo coached Spartan team. There are currently sitting second the Wolverines in the Big Ten standings. The Spartans have only lost to Louisville and Kansas. Both of these games ended close.

Wisconsin

Finally healthy this year after an abysmal showing last season, the Badgers are playing like they used to. Look for them to bounce back this weekend after back to back losses to Western Kentucky and Minnesota. They look to end this streak against the Nittany Lions tonight. They have the ability to really compete in this conference and have the talent to win on any given day.

Indiana

It’s all about Romeo Langford for the Hoosiers. He is a real threat. The projected lottery pick has dazzled this season, leading the Indiana Hoosiers to a top 25 ranking. Indiana is currently riding a hot streak after getting blown out by the Blue Devils, they’ve won their last seven games. This includes victories against Butler and Louisville. Archie Miller’s Hoosiers look to give the Wolverines their first loss of the season today. Watch out for Langford, he just put up 28 on the fight Illini. The Wolverines will have to continue their excellent run of defense to keep the Hoosier’s star in check.

Ohio State

Ohio State has only had two losses this season, and those came against Syracuse and the Spartans. Losing against the Orange or Michigan State shouldn’t be considered a terrible loss, however, they’ve yet to win against any quality opponents. Some might argue their home win against Minnesota was a good victory, but apart they’ve done little to impress.

If Beilein’s Michigan keeps up their amazing defense they can go all the way. With about half of the season wrapped up, it might be too early to tell if they can keep up this undefeated run. Beilein has to approach this season like another other, game-by-game. Even though they lack the star power of Zion and RJ at Duke, the Wolverines display a well-rounded team led by Ignas Brazdeikis, Charles Matthews, and Jordan Poole. The Wolverines must first look to beat a red-hot Hoosier squad led by an incredibly talented Romeo Langford.

Excellence is something that is expected when it comes to Michigan football. What may be an excellent season for other teams is often considered a failure for the Wolverines because excellence is defined differently in Ann Arbor. University of Michigan fans have gotten used to not just winning seasons, but campaigns in which the Wolverines compete for the Big Ten title and wreak havoc on their opponents. Accordingly, it is a fair question to ask whether a ten-win season that resulted in a major bowl game was a failure.

None would say that Michigan’s 2018 campaign was an unfettered success. When a program measures its results based on whether the team can beat Ohio State and reach the College Football Playoffs, failure to do so will leave many questioning the team after the season concludes. Nevertheless, there were many reasons for optimism in the wake of Michigan’s 2018 campaign.

In 2017, the Wolverines got out to a fast start out of the gate and then struggled. They slumped to an 8-5 finish, which is regarded as a failure in Ann Arbor. Michigan lost to all of their rivals, dropping contests to Michigan State, Penn State and the all-important one to Ohio State. Thus, there was much for the Wolverines to recover from and many memories to erase coming into this season. Considering the losses to their rivals in 2017, 2018 was going to be a “Revenge Tour” for Michigan.

The season got started with a hiccup as the Wolverines dropped a close decision to Notre Dame. The Wolverines fell behind early and could not make up the entire gap in falling 24-17. However, although the Wolverines were down, they were just getting started.

After the loss to Notre Dame, Michigan got hot. The Wolverines promptly walloped a pair of non-conference foes before turning to its Big Ten schedule. Michigan continued its winning ways against its conference rivals. They thrashed a declining Nebraska squad before edging out the vastly improved Northwestern Wildcats. Going into their matchup with rival Wisconsin, Michigan’s record stood at 5-1. Before a frenzied crowd at the Big House, Michigan proceeded to dismantle the Badgers. The Wolverines broke open a close game in the second half to rout Wisconsin 38-13.

Michigan continued to run off wins, ripping off ten wins in a row. This included victories over Michigan State and Penn State, achieving revenge against both of those schools for 2017 losses. The Wolverines gave the Nittany Lions some massive payback, whipping them by five touchdowns. They also throttled the Spartans, holding them to a single touchdown.

The Wolverines went into “The Game” in the thick of the conversation for the College Football Playoffs. A win in the contest would put the Wolverines in the Big Ten title game in the driver’s seat for a playoff spot. A victory would be the ultimate revenge for the beating that they suffered at the hands of the Buckeyes in 2017. However, Michigan fell short in a big way. The Buckeyes laid 62 points on the Wolverines, breaking open a tight contest in the third quarter. In a game against their archrival where Michigan absolutely needed a win, there was none forthcoming. It was the seventh straight time that the Wolverines had fallen short against their rival. Michigan closed the season by getting blown out by Florida in the Peach Bowl.

For the Wolverines, the 2018 season represented a step forward for the program. Still, the program has fallen short of expectations since they hired Jim Harbaugh to coach his alma mater. If the Wolverines’ season comes down to one game, then the “revenge tour” was indeed a failure. However, programs have to be viewed in the context of all 13 games. Based on that metric, the Wolverines had a solid season. They defeated nearly all of their main rivals and embarrassed them in the process. They simply came up short against Ohio State, as they seemingly do every year. Michigan put five players on the All-Big Ten Team and linebacker Devin Bush Jr. won the Nagurski–Woodson Defensive Player of the Year award. Michigan fans should take heart that their team will perennially be near the top of the Big Ten.

There is a sense of madness inherent in every crowd at college basketball games. Fan enthusiasm can be intense whether it’s during the month March or not. Thousands of fans, including students, fill arenas on campuses across the country to cheer on their favorite college team. There is also an increased fervor when arch-rival hits the court.

There’s the Kennel Crew, the Dawg Pack, and the Kennel Red. At Duke University, opponents hear it from the Cameron Crazies. In Michigan, college basketball fans appreciate the competitiveness between two of the state’s biggest cross-state rivals. A battle between the Spartans and Wolverines is intense no matter what the sport.

Michigan and Michigan State play each other once each season in basketball. The two schools split the pair of regular season games between Ann Arbor and East Lansing. The noisy enthusiasm bellowing from each student section makes focusing a true challenge. So, which student section is rowdier, the Maize Rage or the Izzone at Michigan State University?

The Maize Rage

First, let’s give you an overview of each of the two student sections, each one worthy of staking a claim as one of the rowdiest in the nation. As student section notoriety goes, reserved student seating at the Crisler Arena is relatively new. However, none deserves more credit for creating a home court advantage.

The Maize Rage Michigan student section was born in the mid-1990s during a less-than-competitive stretch for the Wolverine basketball program. The students took it upon themselves to make playing an average talent Michigan team a challenge; at least, on their home court at least.

Over the next 20 years, it became one of the most formidable student sections in college basketball. They boast of more than 2,000 actual members and fill every seat in the student section for every Wolverine home game. The section looks like a sea of golden maize. When the Michigan State University Spartans come calling, the bar of rapid enthusiasm is raised.

Noise inside the Crisler Arena can reach a deafening level, but the volume seems to grow all the louder when their bitter rivals take to the court. Unmistakably gleaming with students in their golden maize Michigan colors, the Maize Rage plays their part at every Michigan Wolverine home basketball game.

The Izzone

While the Izzone had its beginnings at about the same time as the Maize Rage, it is actually a student section that morphed from one legendary head coach to his successor. The Izzone has its roots planted in the beloved Jud Heathcote, the Spartan’s head basketball coach before Tom Izzo took over in 1996.

Heathcote formed a group known as the Spartan Spirits. Early nicknames for the student section in East Lansing were appropriately tabbed Jud’s Jungle. The rowdy student crowd exuded a zoo like atmosphere in support of their school.

During the 1996 season, there were only an estimated couple hundred true members of the Izzone. However, back-to-back conference titles and an NCAA championship in 2000, turned Spartan basketball into a campus craze.

Izzone membership now exceeds an estimated 4,000 students and alumni. The operations of one of the country’s most impressive student sections, is coordinated by the Student Alumni Foundation. Izzone members orchestrate mind-numbing cheers and jeers that ignite their own players and torment the opposition.

So, Who is Rowdiest?

Of course, Michigan faithful and Michigan State supporters will each have their own opinion about which student section is rowdier. Truth be told, each one can create such a chaotic, noisy atmosphere that opponents become befuddled into uncharacteristic mistakes.

Maize Rage cheers work voraciously to distract the attention of every opponent’s foul shot. Izzone students work diligently to disrupt the orderly offensive pursuits each time a competitor touches the basketball.

While both create a formidable home court advantage, the Izzone actually challenges its students to be proactive. The Izzone is divided into two sections, the lower and upper bowls. Students prefer the lower bowl and its proximity to court side.

However, must meet a few rigid requirements to earn their way into the lower bowl. Aspiring lower bowl students must attend a September Izzone Camp to even get a chance at seats in this section. There are also sportsmanship rules and students can only miss two games from the previous season to be eligible.

While there are requirements to be part of the Maize Rage, there is a sort of right-of-passage to gain access to the Izzone. None of the visiting basketball teams to the Crisler Arena or the Breslin Center get out of town without appreciating the fanatical support these students have for their basketball teams.

How Michigan Can Win for the Fourth Consecutive Time over the Spartans

Faithful Spartan fans are always eyeballing their team’s next encounter with their bitter in-state rival Wolverines. Fresh off a nine-point win in Columbus, Ohio against the 14th ranked Buckeyes, MSU has a dozen conference games to wade through before a trip to Ann Arbor in late February.

Both schools are parked in the top-10 of the current NCAA basketball rankings. We’re nearly two months away from the first of two regular season games head-to-head. But, whispers of a super important battle in Ann Arbor are careening across the state. Many still feel the Spartans have the better team.

Sure, there is a lot of Big 10 basketball ahead for both these rival schools before that first encounter, but it may have huge implications when that day does arise. So, what will the Wolverines need to do to beat Michigan State in their Sunday afternoon, nationally televised war on February 24th?

Be More Determined

Since Michigan State dropped their season opener against then top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks, the Spartans stock has been rising. They have dropped one other game, a four-point nail-biter on the home court of the Louisville Cardinals.

Coach Tom Izzo would never let his squad look ahead farther than their next opponent, but fans will. There is a reasonable likelihood both teams will be in the thick of both the national and Big 10 championship pictures. Michigan currently sits undefeated at 3rd in the country.

The lower ranked team has won the last four head-to-head matchups when both teams have been ranked. If the season continues on its current course over the next few weeks, as potentially the higher ranked team, Michigan must be more determined than the Spartans.

Home Court Advantage

Since 2010, the winner of this in-state hoops battle has been won in spurts. Michigan State culminated a 2010 season sweep with their fourth consecutive victory. Since then, Michigan has won in three-game blocks, with none of these three victories being very close.

Their nine-point win in New York last March was that third straight victory. The Wolverines will need to take advantage of the fever-pitch enthusiasm that will come from the Maize Rage. Michigan needs to start fast to raise the noise level inside Crisler Arena.

While the student section is an important advantage at every home Michigan game, against the Spartans their rowdiness will be even more intense. Michigan needs to take advantage of this home court edge.

Defend, Defend, Defend

Michigan has the 3rd most efficient defense in the nation currently. The Spartans produce points at the 9th highest total per game in the country. Something will have to give in Ann Arbor on February 24th.

One reason the Spartans score so prolifically is their 9th rated three-point shooting percentage. The Wolverines will have to defend the entire court against Michigan State. Since Michigan doesn’t shoot the ball nearly as efficiently as the Spartans.

They must vigorously defend against the Spartans, contesting every shot. Michigan has held nine of their 14 opponents this season to under 60 points. To beat the Spartans in their first head-to-head matchup, and maybe keep an undefeated season alive, Michigan must defend, defend, and defend.

Take Care of the Ball

The fourth key to giving Michigan an edge of the Spartans will be turnovers. You may think this is a commonly mentioned game factor, but it may prove even more so in this head-to-head matchup. Turnovers have been a key factor in each of these team’s games to date.

Part of Michigan’s success thus far has been in no small part the result of committing the fifth fewest turnovers in the nation. Michigan State has turned the ball over nearly 60 more times than the Wolverines. Late game turnovers cost the Spartans the game against Louisville.

The Spartans are tied for 159th in the country in relation to turnover prevalence. Usually, this poor of standing doesn’t generate a top-10 ranking with only two defeats. Clearly, Tom Izzo’s MSU squad will try to reduce their turnovers on February 24th.

They also will be trying to force their rivals into miscues. If Michigan State can even out the turnover disparity, it won’t bode well for the Wolverines. Michigan’s point production feeds off turnovers, while at the same time avoiding them on offense. Turnovers will be a huge factor in this game.

When the Michigan State Spartans come calling to Crisler Center it will be an important game in the Big 10 Conference and on the national stage. To best their recent trend of winning only three consecutive matchups, the Wolverines will need to bring their best.
